The most recently discovered phylum in the animal kingdom (1995) is the phylum Cycliophora. It includes three species of tiny organisms that live in large numbers on the outsides of the mouthparts and appendages of lobsters. The feeding stage permanently attaches to the lobster via an adhesive disk, and collects scraps of food from its host's feeding by capturing the scraps in a current created by a ring of cilia. The body is sac-like and has a U-shaped intestine that brings the anus close to the mouth.

Signaling mechanisms are surveyed in this chapter, with an emphasis on the sources of hormones, the stimuli that elicit secretion, the signal transduction mechanism at the target cells, and the functional results. Detailed exploration of signal transduction allows students the chance to note differences between hormones that activate preexisting effector proteins versus those that work by changing gene expression in the target cells. A given hormone's "target cells" are those cells that have the specific receptor to that hormone.

Rose-picker's disease is caused by the yeast, Sporothrix schenkii. The yeast grows on the exteriors of rose-bush thorns. If a human gets pricked by such a thorn, the yeasts can be introduced under the skin. The yeasts then assume a hyphal morphology and grow along the interiors of lymphatic vessels until they reach a lymph node. This often results in the accumulation of pus in the lymph node, which subsequently ulcerates through the skin surface and then drains.

The cycads, a mostly tropical phylum of gymnosperms, evolved about 300 million years ago and were dominant forms during the Age of the Dinosaurs. Though their sperm are flagellated, their ovules are pollinated by beetles. These beetles get nutrition (they eat pollen) and shelter from the microsporophylls. Upon visiting megasporophylls, the beetles transfer pollen to the exposed ovules. In cycads, pollen cones and seed cones are borne on different plants. Cycads synthesize neurotoxins, especially in the seeds, that are effective against most animals, including humans.

10) The volume enclosed by the plasma membrane of plant cells is often much larger than the corresponding volume in animal cells. The most reasonable explanation for this observation is that A) plant cells are capable of having a much higher surface-to-volume ratio than animal cells. B) plant cells have a much more highly convoluted (folded) plasma membrane than animal cells. C) plant cells contain a large vacuole that reduces the volume of the cytoplasm.

Most UNIX kernels are monolithic. Recall from earlier in this chapter, a monolithic kernel is one that includes virtually all of the OS functionality in one large block of code that runs as a single process with a single address space. All the functional com- ponents of the kernel have access to all of its internal data structures and routines. If changes are made to any portion of a typical monolithic OS, all the modules and routines must be relinked and reinstalled, and the system rebooted, before the changes can take effect. As a result, any modification, such as adding a new device driver or file system function, is difficult. This problem is especially acute for Linux, for which devel- opment is global and done by a loosely associated group of independent developers. Although Linux does not use a microkernel approach, it achieves many of the potential advantages of this approach by means of its particular modular architec- ture. Linux is structured as a collection of modules, a number of which can be auto- matically loaded and unloaded on demand. These relatively independent blocks are referred to as loadable modules [GOYE99]. In essence, a module is an object file whose code can be linked to and unlinked from the kernel at runtime. Typically, a module implements some specific function, such as a file system, a device driver, or some other feature of the kernel's upper layer. A module does not execute as its own process or thread, although it can create kernel threads for various purposes as neces- sary. Rather, a module is executed in kernel mode on behalf of the current process.
